so i had my interview at the University of Kentucky today. i flew in yesterday evening/night and stayed at the University inn, right next to the University Hospital and the school of dentistry. my trip actually started being awesome well before i got to kentucky. while waiting in charlotte for my plane, i started making small talk with some people on my flight (me making small talk???? go figure..) there was a married gal from hazzard kentucky (dukes?) who had the cutest accent i've ever heard. i am a sucker for accents :) then i met a guy who was a legit magician/clown living out of richmond kentucky. he said "you must not be from around here because you're wearing flip flops." i told him i'm from arizona, and he mentioned that he worked with a circus...running out of QUEEN CREEK! i was like "uh dude, i live there." ends up...just up ocotillo there's a bunch of elephants and zoo stuff and circus stuff, he used to work there. it's like 15 minutes from my house. coincidence :)
so we get on the 50 minute flight to lexington. the married gal and her friend were getting hit on by this very drunk man. i don't disrespect people for drinking, but i now detest drunks. it was disgusting, immature, and just stupid. i felt like punching the swede in the face...but he was about 3x bigger than me and the aisle was just about the size of my waist..so not much room to move around.
so i get 5 hours of sleep (for the 2nd night in a row. hopefully it won't be 3 in a row), and wake up at 6am east coast time (3am in arizona...ugh). i had breakfast with a doctor that i went to guatemala with in 2006, who also went to college with my mom. he showed me around the hospital and introduced me to one of the dental staff and interviewing peoples. she was a very nice lady.
at 9am i walk into room D-155 and there are 4 other applicants already seated. a girl from atlanta, a guy from idaho, a girl from cincinnati, and a lady from Albania. Dr. Mullaney, who used to run the endodontics program and teach at UK, gave a summary of the school..what it's values are, why it's unique, why it's awesome, etc... my first interview was with Dr. Arevalo (the academic interview). he was quite intimidating actually. he was very down to business, and kind of quiet. i felt like i was being questioned in court. regardless, this was my chance to shine...so being retarded, i had eye contact issues haha. in the middle of the interview he said "ok. stop. just a tip between us, keep eye contact at all times." he gave me a few other tips which i took to heart. he asked about my GPA, my DAT score..if they reflected my true potential as a student. he, being of some latin american heritage, asked why i had dropped spanish 201 back in 2004. i was like "dangit. i didn't see that coming." he told me, "you know, being bilingual is very attractive to an interviewer..." and i told him that i'm attempting to relearn it, along with italian. that is not a lie...i really am trying. i just haven't gotten around to it lol. he asked how old i was..which kind of caught me by surprise. i told him..and he started laughing (broke the ice finally!). he seemed entertained by that. he asked about homeschooling, and how the transition was into college. at the end of the wonderful interview, he gave me his card. i don't know if he does that to everyone...but i was stoked that he did.
Dr. Mullaney was my next interviewer. he just wanted to see who i was..what i'm all about. he was a very, very nice man. i thoroughly enjoyed my time with him. it felt like i was catching up with an old friend. he asked about my extracurricular activities and volunteer experience..he brought up my years of piano and thought highly of that. then out of nowhere, we're talking about italy. that was the remainder of the conversation actually. we spent about half the time talking about italy..and then shifted to greece. he gave me some solid ideas for my eurotrip next summer, if i go.
back into the meeting room. a 4th year student then took us on a tour of the school of dentistry. this was exciting. all of the students are SO nice and friendly. even the professors were talking to us applicants like we were family. initiating conversation and such as...it was a very warm, comforting feeling. i love the atmosphere. we started on the 6th floor and proceeded downward until we got to the first floor. he took us through the labs, clinics, oral surgery and orofacial pain, endo, perio, and other stuff. we had pizza for lunch with 5 current students in the program, and we got to ask them questions and talk about the school. they were in love with it...and now i seem to be :)
before i knew it, the interview was over and i'm heading back to the airport. got there at 2pm, for my flight at 4pm. or so i thought....ends up, the plane had mechanical problems, and we had to wait for the 6pm flight. that messed up my connecting flight to phoenix which was departing from charlotte at 5.30pm. so i got bumped to the 8.10pm flight in charlotte...and viola! now i'm on the long boring plane ride back home. it's exactly 8pm AZ time..and we're supposed to arrive at 9.30pm. i can't take much more of this. i *should* be studying ecology (i've almost done the first chapter fully)...but i seem apathetic about studying right now. i *should* feel bad about that too. but no. not really.
i think that this experience was just what i needed. it was awesome. i saw a school that was committed to making a difference; a school that loves it's students, and wants them to succeed in every way possible. i saw a school that cares about it's community, and is continually looking for ways to improve healthcare for underprivileged citizens. i saw qualities that i respect in a prospective school. God has blessed me greatly. he brought me there for SOME reason...we'll find out in a few months i guess :) it will be hard for any other school to top this i think.
i have a mad craving for food right now..if you couldn't tell from before. a crazy plate of spaghetti and meatballs....i wish my favorite hero would bring me some :) it sounds good. i can almost smell it.
so this is what a tired, sore, hungry, and procrastinating college student does when he has a lot to do. what else am i going to do?? study? ha. lol. surely not.
so i have my next interview at ASDOH (A.T. Still) in arizona, on october 14th. then on october 18th, i have an interview at colorado. supposedly that school is just awesome. very new and incredible equipment. finally i have my interview at Midwestern (in glendale,az) on the 22nd. those will be interesting for sure.
well i don't have anything else to write about..so i think i'll leave it at that. thanks for listening :)
ps. i'm sitting next to an older lady on this flight...we just got to talking and she lives next to my grandparents at power and queen creek! then out of nowhere she tells me "you have the most perfect face..and a beautiful figure. i just had to tell you that. has anyone ever told you that before? i'm an old lady so i'm allowed to say these things." LOL talk about making someone's day :P
Thank you for getting me through recital with this blog.
