so continuing on my last post...the girl on my flight...i asked her to save me a seat! i never do that lol. so just by her personality...i thought she'd be a christen. her name is christina...so that's pretty darn close in my book. she's christian, and is from kentucky. enough said. the bad part....she has a 16 year old bf lol. i was like "whaa....16?" but anyways..
so i took a cab to my hotel, the "medical inn." it looked like a creepy house where a killer clown could live. i survived the night, despite the bugs crawling on the walls. so i got a great night's sleep and had a wake-up call at 6.30am. so i got up at 10am :P
after a shower and good ole teeth brushing, i packed up and walked over to the school of dentistry. i didn't want to walk in my suit, so i just wore some jeans, a shirt, and a jacket. i'm glad i did because it was very..very cold outside. so with my toes frozen from wearing sandals, i make it to the school of dentistry and take the elevator up to the 5th floor.
sally davenport greeted me and we chatted for a bit. the morning group was just finishing their interviews, so i was early. it was 10.45am and the afternoon one started at 12pm (12:00:01pm could be considered afternoon i guess). i had to withdraw cash from an ATM, and sally told me to go to the union across the street..so i went...
i came back and started chilling with the dental students there were from the morning. there were 4 of them. out of all the applications at the school, they interview only 51 out of state students, and they accept around 35 of them. so i'd have to be a retard at my interview to not get accepted there. one of the guys had a really funny personality, and used to be a pro football player for the Saints. now he's trying dentistry. he was awesome. so finally 12pm came and we had lunch. i met this guy dan...the guy who i interviewed with in colorado. he was cool too. so we had a lunch that was actually incredible. it was a warm, shredded turkey sandwich with cheese and tomatoes and lettuce. lol this was funny....i open a little cup of what appeared to be macaroni...took a spoonful...and it ended up being spicy mayonnaise. OMG i started gagging at the table, and all the applicants and 4 OU students started looking at me funny...i spit it out and said "i thought it was macaroni..but it's mayo. don't eat it." they all started cracking up. it was funny lol. took a while to get the bad taste out of my mouth. a warm lunch though....that was enough to make me like it a lot more than i already did. we took a tour of the school...and i got to have my picture taken in the sim clinic :P
after the tour, we went back into the waiting room and watched some video about oklahoma city. then we had interviews. there were 3 separate interviews, and mine showed up about 10 minutes late. but he finally came, and we walked into his office. immediately i saw a framed bible verse on his wall, so i felt a little more comfortable. he asked questions about my college experience, being young, volunteer experiences, etc... we both share the idea that a dentist is someone who can serve someone else..and expect little or nothing in return. so i asked him how he uses his practice to reach out and help underpriviliged people. he said that he's involved in many christian groups on campus and he donates his fees to the different groups instead of collecting them himself. so i asked if he was christian...and he said yes! i was like...sweet :D so i asked him about the churches in the area, and how good they were. he also gave me some Godly encouragement about school and my future. it was sooo awesome!
my next interviewer was a lady..and nothing super special happened there. she was very nice and had a good smile. but my third, and last, interview was awesome. the guy graduated from OHSU (oklahoma) in 1988 and practices with his dad and brother. he just talked about whatever with me. he was so much fun to talk with. i asked him about what he does...and he talked to me about this machine that he has. when he's doing a crown for someone....after he preps the tooth, he scans it with this camera. then the image goes into this computer and it calculates what the perfect crown should look like. he tweaks it as he likes..then he puts a block of porcelain into this 3-dimensional printer..and it carves out the exact crown that the person needs. it takes 8 minutes..and the patient will be gone in 15 minutes. talk about incredible. so i was kinda speechless and in awe..so he kept talking about different cool stuff that he does. i told him i play tennis, and he said "really? a man after my own heart." he plays tennis a lot, and 2 of his sons just went to state for high school, and one of them placed 3rd. that's awesome...so we talked about that for a while. soon enough, time was up. he closed by talking about how incredible and impressive my application is..and he said it like 4 times. not even exaggerating. he kept talking about it. i was just saying "well thanks" or "thank you!" he said "i hope you get to come here next year." i said "well i hope i get the chance." and he closed by saying "oh trust me. you won't have to worry about that. you'll get in." lol that's when i go speechless again.
so overall it was an awesome school. chill people...small class...very high academic standards, they have an oral surgery program....lots of +'s...but also some -'s. i'm just gonna keep praying about it and see what God wants me to do.
